How does a Citi Rewards+ Card work?

A Citi Rewards+ Card is an annual fee-free credit card for anyone looking for an everyday credit card. While it has some rewards and others, if you’re focused on traveling right now, maybe you’ll find better options with some of Chase’s co-branded cards. While their rewards may not be such an advantage for everyday use, you can get more points when purchasing airline tickets or hotel rooms.

It works with the Citi Thank You Program, a feature that many credit card users only find out when they apply for this option. The rewards are a bit underwhelming for those who are big spenders. But this won’t be such a problem when you don’t have these types of spending habits.

While some other credit cards will give you an intro reward after $3.000 or $4.000 for the first few months, you’ll be able to get your intro reward for a lot less by using Citi Rewards+.

If you already have a Citi product that earns you Thank You rewards, this is a great choice to get rewards faster. After all, they will combine through the program and you’ll be able to redeem points much faster.

Who is a Citi Rewards+ Card for?

The Citi Rewards+ Card is ideal for someone who isn’t a big spender. Those small, everyday purchases are what draws the most attention to this credit card, that gives you the opportunity to earn points even by getting a $0,5 gum at the neighborhood store.

After getting enough points with these small purchases you can exchange them for gift cards that you can use in almost any big store of your liking. It’s also a good idea for those who already have Citi credit cards, such as Citi Premier Card and Citi Prestige Card.

All of them give you Thank You points, so you can focus small purchases on Citi Rewards+ and other bigger buys on other cards. In the end, you’ll get the best of all words by joining points from every credit card and redeem them.

Rewards program for this credit card

There is an interesting rewards programs aimed at people who don’t spend so much with their credit cards. You can earn points easily because every small purchase gets rounded up to 10 points. You’ll also earn points in the following manner:

  • 2 Thank You points at supermarkets and gas stations for the first $6.000 spent every year;
  • 5 Thank You points per dollar for the first $6.000 spent in hotels and air travel for 12 months after opening your account;
  • Round up the nearest 10 points for every small purchase (without limits);
  • 10% points back for the first 100.000 points you redeem every year.

As you can see, there are many ways to earn points, even while traveling. However, we don’t recommend you use this credit card as a traveler’s card. Some other Citi options offer higher point percentages for travel spending and could give you a lot more advantages, such as elite status and VIP lounges for airports.

Citi Rewards+ Card intro offer

There is a rewards intro offer for anyone who opens a new account with Citi. This means that if you already have a Citi credit card it won’t be available to you. Either way, after getting this card you’ll earn 20.000 bonus points after spending $1.500 within the first 3 months. This could amount to $200 in gift cards through the Thank You website.

Rewards redemption

Earning points is only half of what you must pay attention to when choosing a credit card. The way you redeem them is also really important, after all, you wouldn’t want a card that redeems most of your points in airline tickets when you barely travel.

Citi Rewards+ Card has a complex redemption program, since points are worth more or less according to what you use them for. Check out a general overview of the rules:

  • Statement credit: your points are worth half a cent as statement credits with a minimum one cent for redemption;
  • Cash back: you can redeem your points as a check that gets mailed to you. In this case, the points are worth half a cent and you must redeem at least $5;
  • Mortgage payment or student loan payment: points are worth one cent each in this case, but it’s only possible via phone;
  • Travel bookings: you can redeem points using the Thank You Travel Center, with a point worth one cent each. There’s also a $23 fee for each ticket you get this way;
  • Shop with points program: the program offers the opportunity to make purchases using points at select retailers, such as Amazon, PayPal, BestBuy and others with points worth less than one cent each;
  • Gift card: you can get gift cards with points worth about one cent each.

Cons, APRs and fees for this Citi Rewards+ Card

The greatest problem with this credit card is how little its points are worth. While you can get points in many ways, they are rarely worth more than one cent each when redeemed. This means that anyone who has a bigger spending should look for an alternative.

You should also keep an eye out for the following APRs and fees:

  • 14,24% – 24,24% variable APR;
  • 0% intro purchase APR for 15 months;
  • No annual fee;
  • 5% or $5 balance transfer fee;
  • 5% or $10 cash advance fee.

You can apply for the Citi Rewards+ Card through Citi’s official website.
